Ariadne was the daughter of Minos, king of Crete, and his wife, Queen Pasiphae. Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and she is the one who provided him with the golden thread he had to follow in order to find his way to the center of the Labyrinth and slay the monstruous Minotaur. Once Theseus killed the beast (with a sword Ariadne had given him as well) he was able to find his way out of the Labyrinth following the golden thread Ariadne had given him.
Ariadne was half-sister to the Minotaur, because their mother, Queen Pasiphae, had copulated with a marvelous white bull. Another son of Minos and Pasiphae, Androgeus, had been killed in an ambush in Athens, after he'd gone there to the All-Athenian games. Minos was enraged and called on Zeuz aid to take revenge against Athens. Zeus complied and all sorts of calamities befell on Athens: famine, wars, earthquakes, until the Athenians complied to provide the 7 most beautiful athenian maids and young boys to be eaten each year by the Minotaur, who ate human flesh.This sacrifices went on for many years, until Theseaus, with Ariadne's help, was able to kill the Minotaur which lived in the center of the Labyrinth.
Ariadne's thread has thus come to signify something that you have to follow to get to your destiny, fulfill it, and then return home victoriously.
